Indiana Teacher And Principal Force Child To Do Pledge Of Allegiance, Mother Sues – Anti Media News

A Terre Haute, IN mother is suing an elementary school principal and teacher for violating her 8 year old son’s constitutional rights by forcing him to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance against his will.

In March, Jamie Porter’s first-grade son at Fuqua Elementary School did not stand to salute the flag, and his teacher, Kelly McFarland, sent the student to the principal’s office, reported Tribstar News.

According to the lawsuit, when the child asked why he did not salute the flag, he said “he was doing it to protest the government of the United States, as it was racist, greedy and does not care about people.”

Rather than applaud him for speaking what he sees as the truth or defending his first amendment rights, the principal, Mary Beth Harris, removed him from lunch, and forced him to practice the pledge.

So she forced a child to pledge his allegiance to what he he sees as a symbol of racism, greed, and lack of caring.

“He was later required by Harris to recite the pledge with her. This is a flagrant denial of A.B.’s rights under the First Amendment and he requests his damages, both compensatory and punitive,” the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit states that the little boy sat quietly in his seat and did not cause a disruption when he refused to stand for the pledge, and the child, who recently was in therapy for the death of his father, “remains extremely upset about going to school. He has always felt that he was an outsider and this, compounded by his father’s death, makes these feelings even worse. He is suffering continuing anxiety and harm because of this incident.”

The ACLU of Indiana is working with the family in this case because “it struck us as an egregious example of a Constitutional violation.  It’s not the first complaint from around the state of schools which apparently are not complying.”

All Americans are guaranteed their constitutional rights. It is not up to teachers or principals to force kids to say a pledge of allegiance to a flag, their job is to educate kids.
