Five Christian College Football Players Face Felony Charges After Brutal Hazing of Fellow Student

At conservative Christian school Wheaton College, college football takes precedence over morality. At a school that promotes Christian morals- officials have literally “turned the other cheek” and excused five of its football players who are facing felony charges in the kidnapping and attempted rape of a fellow student they are passing off as innocent “hazing”.

As reported by Patheos:

According to multiple reports five members of the varsity football team for the conservative Christian school Wheaton College have been charged with aggravated battery, mob action and unlawful restraint after terrorizing a freshman football player last year in a deplorable hazing incident.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office reports James Cooksey; Kyler Kregel; Benjamin Pettway; Noah Spielman and Samuel TeBos have been charged with aggravated battery, mob action and unlawful restraint.

The Chicago Tribune reports details of the assault:

The student told investigators that he was watching the NCAA basketball tournament in a dorm room on March 19, 2016, when several teammates entered the room and tackled him… The freshman kicked his legs and yelled at them to stop, only to be punched and have his bare legs and wrists wrapped in duct tape…

The freshman told investigators that he was placed in the backseat of a teammate’s vehicle and held down by at least two players while others piled into the vehicle…

What happened next is nothing short of sexual assault.

The freshman told investigators that his teammates restrained him with more duct tape during the drive, pulled down his shorts and underwear, then repeatedly tried to insert an object into his rectum…

Commenting on his ordeal, the unnamed victim, who immediately left conservative Christian school and transferred to a different college after the assault, said:

This has had a devastating effect on my life. What was done to me should never occur in connection with a football program or any other activity. … I am confident that the criminal prosecution will provide a fair and just punishment to the men who attacked me.

The college ended up conducting their own “investigation” but did not report the incident to authorities to shield them from prosecution. Instead, they were ordered to a mere 50-hour commitment of community service and a short essay reflection on the matter.

The article continues:

That’s right: Community service and an essay for kidnapping and the attempted rape of a fellow student, because college football is that important.

Despite their heinous crimes, all five of the players facing felony charges were still playing for the school team as of last week.

The Chicago Tribune notes that the conservative Christian college football team has had some serious problems in the past:

The team made national headlines nearly three years ago after players dressed up in Ku Klux Klan robes as part of so-called team-building activity in a campus gym. A group of 20 players, some of whom were black, parodied several movies, including “Bad Boys II,” a 2003 Martin Lawrence and Will Smith comedy that pokes fun at the KKK. During the skit, the group wore Klan-style white hoods and robes and carried Confederate flags.

Players involved with the skit said it was intended to be satirical, but acknowledged it was inappropriate. They apologized to the campus community and asked for forgiveness.

Bottom line: At Wheaton, college football comes before morality. It’s a school where the KKK and white supremacy is entertainment; and the kidnapping and attempted rape of a fellow student is just “innocent hazing” by some “good Christian boys.”

What are thoughts on the matter? Now that the five students have been formally charged, what should happen to the administration at Wheaton College who initially swept the assault under the rug? Reporting sexual assault is already made difficult for victims and male victims are among the least to come forward because of not being taken seriously (as this case here).
