Colorado Republican claims pregnancy from rape is a gift from God.
A recently discovered video recorded last year shows Colorado Republican Senate candidate Darryl Glenn calling pregnancy from rape “a gift from God.”
The clip shows Glenn telling a campaign event audience in Jefferson County in 2015 that if a woman wants an abortion, “don’t ask me to pay for it.”
The Colorado Springs Independent reports Glenn made the inflammatory and insensitive remarks at a 2015 campaign event held in Jefferson County. At the event, Glenn says:
If you want an abortion, don’t ask me to pay for it. That’s not something I’m gonna agree with. That’s a gift from God. There are no exceptions with that. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to pray for you…. That’s a life, regardless of how it got there, and I’m going to pray for you.
Roll Call reports Glenn’s comments are the latest in a line of Republican candidates making controversial comments about abortion and rape:
The comments have shades of 2012 when Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who was running against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, said that if a woman is raped and it is “legitimate rape,” then the body “has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
That same year, Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, running against Democrat Joe Donnelly, said that “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
Both Mourdock and Akin lost their races…
Glenn’s comments are troubling, but not surprising. Many conservative Republicans reject a woman’s right to an abortion.
Recently Republican Senator Marco Rubio said that he doesn’t believe a pregnant woman infected with the Zika virus should have the right to an abortion — even if she had reason to believe the fetus would be born with severe microcephaly.
And as a 2016 GOP presidential candidate Rubio called the historic Roe v. Wade decision “egregiously flawed” while promising to continue the fight to restrict a woman’s right to choose “at home and around the world.”
Indeed, Rubio even brags about wanting to deny victims of rape and incest access to abortion, taking perverse pride in his willingness to deny women their constitutional rights in even the most dire of circumstance.
Another example, Mike Pence, the Republican nominee for vice president, has promised to put an end to safe and legal abortion if Trump is elected.
We’ll see Roe vs. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs.
As for Darryl Glenn, he is expected to lose his election bid to represent Colorado in the U.S. Senate. Currently his opponent, incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet, is leading Glenn in the polls.
Commenting on the story, Bennet campaign spokeswoman Alyssa Roberts said:
(Bennet) thinks women have the right to make their own health care decisions and is proud to have 100 percent ratings from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice.
