Gilpin said some of the officers could be suspended without pay as the investigation continues.
The audit started after an internal affairs investigation decided it was necessary to review the payments to some of the Troop E troopers.
Attorney General Maura Healey, will review the results of the audit and decide whether to file criminal charges.
Lizzy Guyton, communications director for Gov. Charlie Baker, said in a statement that the governor “commends Colonel Gilpin for conducting a thorough investigation.”
Baker “expects those who violated the public’s trust to face serious penalties. The Baker-Polito Administration looks forward to the Attorney General’s review of the findings,” Guyton said.
